THE TREATMENT AGAINST HYPOTHERMIA AND THE MAINTAIANCE OF NORMOTHERMIA IN THE CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT

The warming blanket OMP WARM 12 is an innovative device made of a very strong polyester fabric including bundles of thousands carbon micro-fi laments.

Carbon, one of the basic elements of living organisms, has important technical features, as:
- a favourable level of conducibility that allows, to generate heat, to use a very low voltage,
- insensitiveness to humidity.
The high strength of the product makes it washable even in a laundry machine and steam sterilizable at 134°C.

The particular manufacturing process allows to produce a soft, easy to handle light fabric, providing a high level of comfort for the patient.
The functioning of OMP WARM 12 is very simple: just plugging it in, the blanket gets warm reaching the desired temperature selected on the electronic transformer (from 28°C to 40,7°C)*. The heat increase takes place on the whole of the blanket surface, warming safely the patient
through thermal conduction.
The low voltage that is needed, only 12 Volts, and the product conformity to existing standards for electromagnetic compatibility, make OMP WARM 12 usable in any healthcare environment.
The device has to be positioned in direct contact with the mattress, then covered by a traditional cotton or non-woven blanket.
If needed the device can also be positioned on top of the patient, always interleaving a cotton or non-woven blanket.
The radio - lucent feature of carbon and polyester allow the use of the device even during x-ray scanning.

Body temperature is one of the key aspects of human life. To avoid hypothermia and maintain normothermia of the patient are critical factors for a correct approach to pathology. The main causes of hypothermia are anesthetic drug action side effect, room temperature, post-trauma shock. Recent clinical studies outlined that hypothermia is often associated to the increase of severe complications, as post-op infections and cardiac diseases. As a consequence, the length of hospitalization is dramatically extended, impacting negatively the budgets. So far various systems against hypothermia have been used, including passive type approaches (insulating blankets to decrease the loss of body heat) and active approaches (warm air or warm water systems, heating lamps, etc.).
These systems too often do not perform as expected, their preparation is time-consuming, the dedicated equipment is cumbersome, cleaning and disinfection is difficult to be achieved, cost effectiveness is questionable. The ideal product should be technically efficient, easily transportable, versatile enough to be used in Hospital and in emergency conditions, safe for the patient and the personnel, washable and sterilizable, with a cost/benefit ratio definitely advantageous when compared to existing systems.
A newly developed technology allows the manufacturing of a special fabric, able to effi ciently support the treatment against hypothermia and the maintainance of normothermia in any situation.

The peculiarities of carbon and polyester and the sophisticated electronic control unit provide a state of the art product that is:

Safe - it totally complies to all existing standards
- it is washable in laundry machine and steam sterilizable at 134°C
- latex free

Reliable - definitely easy to be used
- 100 laundry cycles warranty

Versatile - it can be used anywhere

Efficient - it works with only 12 Volts
- derisive power consumptions
- tangible advantageous cost/benefit ratio

One of the main objectives during the product development stage was to make normothermia management very simple and in the meantime “comfortable” for any operator. The most evident example is in the Operating Room environment, where a tradizional system for patient warming could be extremely cumbersome for the Surgical Team and Nurse staff .
OMP WARM 12 provides the best performance when positioned below the patient: the staff has a totally free working space, managing effi ciently patient body temperature without getting in direct contact with the warming element.

“Total body” warming of the patient only. No warming eff ects of the surroundings. Adaptable to any surface.

Disposable dedicate covers, tested and verifi ed for their capability to guarantee the highest level of safe heat transfer and liquids repellency to maintain OMP WARM 12 clean.
